Uncut Gems: Safdie Brothers channels the predicament of Greed through the taut portrayal of Howard

Scene from UNCUT GEMS

The moment the arc of the character comes into the stage, the momentum of the diluted world gets earthly reflected through the eyes of Howard Ratner, a charismatic Jewelry Shop Owner with the layers of gore and subtle vulnerability in its stand. The structure of the character is precisely brought to live with its revelations, actions and consequences blending together to make a flavorful platter cutting the edge through time. This 2hr 15 min, taut ride of self-realization and spine-chilling revelations are the key notes of Uncut Gems that took Safdie Brothers 10 years to give shape. They eventually wrote about 160 drafts, and 80 plus storyboard designs till embracing the final look. Josh and Benny Safdie in an interview, revealed that the casting for the Movie was the most intriguing at the same time gruesome part, where from Kobe Bryant to Kevin Garnett, measuring the scale of the character arc, they had to change the Draft before staying true to Kevin Garnett in his Debut.

Safdie’s have intrusively channeled the layers of Greed through the character arc of Howard. He is somehow attached with the strings that connect several tones of his visual narrative, a person who is obsessed with the flavor of Betting business and eventually the unbearable consequences that lays his foot down on the ground as he is suppressed under the burden of Debt, Relation, Family, Business and other adversaries. The surroundings of the character bring in the edge of persuasion thoroughly as the busy streets of New York elevates the tension and rush that gives stand to the skin of Howard and his dilapidated mindset. His skin is written cleverly in such an aspect that reveals the fear, yet opposes as the character still runs for the pursuit to taste the flavor of victory, with his soul in stake.

Once the frame starts, it gets its pace immediately as Howard moves his self for a go by selling his worth for captivating the aroma of dollars, that’s sticks him around in the game. This is a crazy business mind you, with the sense of trust, comes the immediate backlash from the powerful forces that are mending the bridge between several channels. Howard is in debt from several channels, that ranges from his own family to locals to Shop owners based in New York. On the other hand, gripping the tonality Safdie Brothers, surfaces the poignant dubious nature of the lead, through the strings the connects the relation of Adam Sandler with his co-worker/girlfriend portrayed in screen by Julia Fox, taking the grip lose with his wife portrayed by Idina Menzel.

The Greed takes it’s stand within the sphere by the arrival of Black Opal, that form the central tone of the script. Howard chases for money and victory with sexual satisfaction that urges through the skin of Julia, and the Bet in the game of Basketball, that runs throughout the screen evoking the sense of gore and pity for Howard as the unravels the doors consequently. Uncut Gems can be turned as the fight for power and position in the market (which we all seek for). Howard chases his dream battling and eventually losing the sight from his life but still chases the moments through and through. He is turned down by the society for his nature and obsession, till he finds the chord that fell strong.

Breaking the path, Uncut Gems, stands out for its perfect execution from the starting frame to every end with the use of metaphor & symbols that lies underneath. He is centered as a whimsical character who has nothing to alter his destiny, still he binges on the moment and gives his change even though he has no idea what he is up to. He wants it, he will take it, no matter what. Adam Sandler who garnished his skills through his journey in SNL (Saturday Night Live), pumping the adrenaline rush to his Comic sphere throughout. Till the moment when this movie stood up strong, that turned the tables up and brought the Actor who finally broke the stereotype and come out as the big name. Safdie’s made big name with the breakthrough movie Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, that lifted the stakes high with the award buzz.

The momentum and the pace were deepened within the opal, (which is considered to be a sign of good luck), where Howard gave it to Kevin Garnett, who was on the verge of chasing the beauty of stones that proved to be a game change for him with the sound of victory and the same led to the disaster in the life of Howard who got ripped off away from the luck that persists within.

Somewhere the obsession proved to be a pivotal line for the lead as he lifted all his money on Celtics and eventually the luck did work for the man who won the Bet of his lifetime and now all the worries seemed to be subtle. But what was the cause of the events was the death of Howard soon he won, though that can be termed a the peaceful death for him, who eventually lived flavors of life and victory, as now his obsession won’t be the force of his destruction and the line between his life and personal attributes eventually will get narrowed down.

Just think if generally speaking, he had cleared off his debt from his millions of dollars, having a lustrous life, with Julia  on the seat yet the rhythm of obsession in the game of Betting would have continued thus leaving the monotony above the line of action.

This was my thoughts and perception on Uncut Gems, (it’s not a review), which is now available on Netflix.

Is Indian Cinema sabotaging the stand of Woman? Let’s see through the story of Lipstick Under My Burkha

Lipstick Under My Burkha With the advent of the term “ Feminism ”, the stakes of the women in our nation is somehow getting its due place up in the male dominated sphere. The major point in the discussion is the very longing fact that, the sexual urge and the visual pleasure is atrociously carried upon the name tag of Women as an object rather than giving them their self-credit, the space that is kept void for years under the sheet of obscenity. We are still on the same road with Bollywood trying to make a difference, the difference in bashing the voice of the so-called feminist ideologist. India is a democratic country with the freedom of speech and expression but the irony speaks itself aloud. Still we have the male gaze right above, suppressing the female flare. The country is divided harshly into the tone of disrespect, the anguish that persists till the Industry blindfolds itself towards the equality and the liberty. We are fearful or rather we are intentionally driving the se

Five Feet Apart dwells on the emphasis of survival surfacing its rhythm aesthetically grounded in emotions

Still from Five Feet Apart The moments we dream, we look around we admire the colours that surface our belongings, its ecstatic, its gleeful, its us who make them beautiful. We make promises to never let go, the beautiful and the closest thing of our life but it’s the saying- “ Time overshadows the most valuable assets of your life, and as you wake up to reality it’s gone" . We dwell into the surface of underlying emotions only when they are gone, gone forever, essence leaves from its body, emptiness surrounds the space leaving it void eventually. We are no one to question death, we are mortal, who knows we are just one inch away from losing the body that carried dreams, life and morality to its existence. Its distinctively grim to carry on our death on our shoulders, waiting each day to end and let the body to leave to soul from the painful abyss reality where we ponder our hearts waking each day to hold out nerve and to solace our soul that “ Not Today ’, its harsh, it’s the
